It's been a while since we updated the look of the sight; so I put some time in on the formatting. Please comment on what you'd like to see interms of the page layout, we're open to suggestion.

There are three major things I want to address with my first post from NYC. They are in order of importance. First, in honor of the start of the USA campaign in the wold cup; here's a rap video Clint Dempsey with nike a while back. Also when I say rap video, its not just Dempsey playing soccer in a rap video; he's spitting verses while tipping in his car with Texas sized rims. The team proved again today that its often better to be lucky than good.

With the conversion of mixtapes from street to blog based distribution, a wider audience than ever has access to the work of emerging hip-hop artists like Bobby Ray Simmons. Over the last three years I've watched the ATL native grow from an enthusiastic upstart with boundless talent into a more mature musician, lyricist, and social commentator. His official debute album (even if its a debute in name only) boasts a list of features as diverse and well respected as one would expect from a well established industry titan like Hova. However unlike some of the weaker songs on Blueprint 3 or any song on Rebirth, these genre crossing collaborations all resulted in coherent, organic, and innovative songs. With his debute album already due shortly, tracks off B.o.B Present: The Adventures of Bobby Ray have been leaking daily. Out of respect for Bobby Ray I'm not going to post all the leaked tracks and I encourage you all to get the album when it comes out. However, the Grand Hussel Wunderkind noticed the positive response to early leaks, and decided that he wasn't going to let anyone steal his thunder. To make sure no one beat him to the punch, he personally leaked Airplanes Part 2, featuring an insane verse from Eminem, via a link on his twitter. Then, this afternoon, shake leaked a cut which will not be on the album. It's a shame this won't make the release. Those who follow B.o.B closely know he has an affinity for flipping Coldplay samples, in this case he uses an interpolation of Lost. This is likely also the reason the track won't be commercially released. (I'm speculating they couldn't get the rights cleared by Coldplay's label). Official release or not, any T.I. and B.o.B collaboration is worth a listen. I'm guessing this will quickly be in heavy rotation in my car.

Aight, I'm not doing the work I should be right now and I'm sure many of you are as well. Those of you who are on break will enjoy this as well. I found this mixtape by a band of college freshmen from philly that totally blew my mind. The group is a jazz - electronica - afro-pop influenced hip hop act consisting of a lead vocalist, key boardist, guitarist, and drummer. Their first official mixtape "Swelly Express" is cosigned by OnSmash and CrooksandCastles and features some incredible interpolations of songs by MGMT, Sufjan Stevens, and Passion Pit as well as a feature from Black Thought. Yes, this is what the Blueprint 3 laid the foundationg for, these guys are building the future of hip-hop.

Dwight Howard In Trouble For Blogging

Funny man Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic has recently landed himself a $15,000 fine for badmouthing officials in his personal blog. Dwight, making comments such as "how can that be, ya'll? It was crazy. They called me for a charge on a flop, a push off when the defender was on me and two fouls on blocked shots" in regards to fouling out after playing about 16 minutes, did so after an Orlando VS. Detroit game last week. Dwight, obviously angry, also posted that he had not played "that little in a game since I was 10 years old in pee-wee ball" and that "what really bothers me is they are letting guys hammer me at one end of the floor, yet I'm being called for everything."

True, every player disagrees with a few calls made here and there, and are sometimes right and sometimes wrong about them, but should a player really be fined for taking his opinion to his own blog? This seems a little bit overboard to me, seeing as Dwight did not attack a specific official, team, or other player, but rather simply expressed his anger over the situation as a whole. And seeing as he also did not make any claims that Orlando should have won the game or that these calls were the reasons behind their loss, why the league would take the time to worry about something like this is beyond me. Have we really reached a point in time where freedom of speech, especially over a personal blog, does not exist?

I understand the league wants to make sure their officials are treated well, especially after what happened this summer and the NBA having to run off of replacements for a while, but personally I think this entire matter is a bit juvenile and Dwight Howard should not feel an ounce of remorse for what he blogged.

NBA, lets lighten up and not make players regret they ever joined the league. Let them do good with their money through organizations like NBA Cares, or even provide for their own families rather than throw it out the window for a senseless cause.

And Dwight, keep on blogging. We all love you.

The Internet Gave Us Attention Deficit

If the title wasn't enough to give it away, Olubowale Folarin's first studio album Attention Deficit (due out on Nov. 10th) leaked into the system of tubes we know as the interweb on Halloween. Luckily this was a treat and not a trick unlike the DJ tagged low quality versions of tracks put out previously. On my first listen I really enjoy the extent to which the beats are built with live instruments featuring Wale's Go Go band. The album features a number of excellent collaborations including tracks featuring Bun B, Gucci, J Cole, and K'naan, but none detract from the album's overall focus on Wale. Tracks like Diary and 90210 display Wale's ability as a story-teller. Shades and Contemplate provides a hint that he may have a more interesting sociological imagination than anyone who has been listen to Chillin' for months would previously have suspected.

Bulls 09-10.

Just ending their second game of the new season, the Bulls are now 1-1, with a win over the Spurs and a loss against the Celtics.

A few weeks ago, before the season started, I wrote an article for the Chicago Flame, about the Bulls and their new season:
The Chicago Bulls went head to head with the Boston Celtics this past Playoff season. Most basketball fans would agree that last season was one of the most exciting seasons the Chicago Bulls have seen in a long time. Not only did they acquire a new coach, Vinny Del Negro, and draft the number one pick, Derrick Rose, but they ended up actually making it to the Playoffs, something that exceeded the expectations of even the most faithful Bulls fan. As a huge supporter myself, I could not be more proud and will never forget the feeling that rushed over me as I stood in the United Center with minutes left of game four, praying that a game that went into double overtime will end in my favor. However, though nothing will ever take away that pride, the Bulls falling apart this season would be frustrating to say the least.

Since the Playoffs, the Bulls have made a few changes. One of their starters, Ben Gordon, got traded to the Detroit Pistons, leaving the Bulls to grab Jannero Pargo, a point guard who used to play for the Bulls from 2003 to 2006. Though I personally like Ben Gordon, and thought he was a good fit for Chicago, one person does not make a team and I do not believe that his departure means the downfall of the Bulls. And since Pargo, the Bulls have also gained two draft picks, Taj Gibson and James Johnson, both power forwards. All three of these players have thus far proven themselves to be worthy of a Playoff team. And though it is not yet known whether or not he will join us in the regular season, Derrick Byars, a guard, is also someone to look out for, exhibiting great talent.

Of course everyone knows it takes more than skill to give a team enough motivation to go after the ring, let alone win it, but the Bulls seem to be going into this upcoming season with the right mindset. Instead of letting the fact that they let the Boston Celtics beat them to the next round (or holding a grudge against Rajon Rondo for shameless fouls), the Bulls took it with a grain of salt and vowed to work harder this time around. Each player took the summer to work towards fixing their weaknesses as well as improving their strengths, and are now a better rounded team. Joakim Noah took to working on free throws, Tyrus Thomas to jump shots and John Salmons to three pointers, something Ben Gordon was awfully good at. And of course everyone is trying to get over their injuries, especially Luol Deng who sat out a good amount due to a problem with his right tibia. Luckily now the Bulls have enough forwards to cover a handful of injuries, God forbid there should be any. For now, all is well in the land of the Bulls.
In my opinion there are three things the Bulls need to do in order not to lose their current status in the NBA. First, they need to stay healthy. Obviously accidents happen, but if they can avoid broken thumbs and fractured legs, the season will go a lot easier for them. Second, they cannot lose confidence. The Bulls fell into a pattern for a while last season of letting every loss get them down, turning a loss or two into a cycle, only worsening the problem. Even the best teams lose sometimes and the Bulls need to master that idea before the season starts and they end up once again with a record of 41-41, an equal amount of wins and loses. And third is no selfish playing by the players. It is no secret that the reason Larry Hughes left was not for financial reasons or because the New York Knicks were dying to have him, it was because he wanted more playing time and Vinny refused to give it to him.

The Chicago Bulls had one hell of a season last year and I know it in my heart that they can have another great one this time around. Judging by their 2-0 preseason they are already on the right track and have lost none of the fire that fueled them towards the Playoffs only a few months ago. It will take hard work and a lot of energy but if they could do it last year, they can do it again. Plus you know what they say right? Only the Bulls.

Though I still agree with what I said in regards to the three things the Bulls should try and do in order to have an even better season than before, I have a few more things to add as well.

In watching Chicago go against San Antonio and Boston, it is clear that shot selection has become very important for us. Though we are only two games into the season, I have noticed that we have started to take more and more forced shots, costing us both points as well as ball possession. If we want to stay in the lead and take control of the game, we have to slow our plays down and think twice before shooting the ball.

Another thing I think Chicago should pay attention to are second-chance points. More often than not, when taking a long two or a three point shot, we fail to position any of our players in the paint to catch a quick rebound and reshoot, in case the initial shot does not go in. I think this is a huge mistake, especially when players like Tyrus Thomas or Brad Miller, aka players not known for their jumpers, are the ones going for the shot. Playing this way, we miss out on crucial rebounds, rebounds which would be easy for someone like Joakim Noah.

All of this aside though, the Bulls so far do not look half bad. True they got slaughtered by the Celtics tonight, but I attribute that fully to awkward tension between the two teams, still left over from last year's Playoffs. The Bulls went to work against the Spurs and came out on top, leaving Tony Parker to score a total of zero points in the entire second half. There will always be losses along with the wins, but as long as the Bulls stay focused and try to improve on their weaker points, this season should be a solid one for them.

Its been a minute since I posted something, and I apologize for that. While I was taking my comprehensive exams for CSS at Wesleyan I looked to Derrick Rose for inspiration. Then, last night while I was watching the Lakers vs. Nuggets game, I got into an argument with my friend Alicia about the extent to which Phil Jackson's coaching style has changed in L.A. First, let me make it clear that I believe that while L.A. has a unique relaxed vibe, Chicago's is cool in an entirely different animal. Chi town cool is a Zen style applied to the art of competition. It's cold sweat pouring off of Scotty Pippen at the free throw line. It's Ben Gordon draining a three in Paul Pierce's face to send game five in to double OT. It's the Dark Night's vigilance in the rain atop the Prudential Building. It's Barack Obama walking into Iowa unknown and away from November the leader of the free world. It's Anthony Braxton's Jazz in the house of the triangle. It's Carl Sanburg's account of the stockyards in the City of Big Shoulders. It's Studs Terkel's examination of race. It's what this country's leadership has missed for the last eight years. It's back it's badass as ever.

The first line of the Pennies (Updated Roster Remix) off the Cool Kids x Don Cannon mixtape, Gone Fishing, perfectly describes the supreme zen of the Chi Town State of Mind which Rose brings to each and every competition. I contend that this reflects the philosophy of team play articulated by Jackson in Sacred Hoops. Without any question, Michael Jordan was a badass motherfucker who wanted the ball more than anyone ever has and maybe ever will. He was the greatest. But he did not necessarily champion Jackson's style despite leading his team. In many ways it is Derrick, who grew up watching the Jordan era bulls, who represents the single purest manifestation of this style of hard nosed yet unselfish play to ever enter the game. The above Adidas video just reminded me yet again why our city should be so proud of its native son. This year we took the White House, soon we will take back the league.

Yes, you can believe the headline. I am actually claiming that Lloyd Banks Rick Ross diss "Officer Down" > "Ether" by Nas. At first I thought this whole Rick Ross and 50 beef was going to end up with both of them embarrassed when their new albums make record low sales. Was I ever wrong. 50 reminded us why we all originally loved him, that he's a sociopathic hilarious ass motherfucker, on "Tia Told Me." Then to remind all of us why Lloyd Banks continues to be one of the best MCs in the game despite of G-Unit rather than because of them, he murdered Rick Ross over a beat which sounds so monumental that it's only fitting that he spits for 3 min + with no chorus. There's no need. Banks leaves off the track by summing up the one verse which sketches out of the flaws in Rick's career fittingly "50 bodied you, I just laid the chalk down."

The charismatic leader of this group, Josh Smith, a.k.a. WordSmith, is known for his previous work with long time friend / producer Illustrious (who is responsible for four of the beats on the album) and is also known for tearing down the house at Psi U this Saturday with his live Hip-Hop ensemble the Concert G's. WordSmith teams with Stax Rothstein (aka the next Ari Emanuel, bka your girlfiend's favorite rapper) and Ayo Stone (aka Andrew Gladstone, bka the next Martin Scorsese), the three "Kosher Nostra" MCs, along with Lu, Ben Block, and a host of others to take you by the ears on an epic hip-hop journey through space and time. I'm skiing in Vermont right now so I apologize for the lack of recent updates. While I'm having a great time, Vermont is probably the most culturally homogeneous state after Maine and I miss Chicago. So I got pretty excited when I saw this hilarious trailer for Mic Terror's new mixtape.

Mic Terror dropped a fake movie trailer to promote his new mixtape, King of the New School, which is scheduled to drop January 27th. If you've been sleeping on Mic you should really give the dude the benefit of the doubt. Is the high top fade goofy? Yes. Is his cadence unusual at times? Definitely. But these factors all make his rhymes more creative and original. Also the quality of his voice reminds me a little bit of Mos Def which is always a good thing. As we all know, white people love Mos Def. Mic I see you, keep reppin the 'Go. We know you're about to blow up - but for those of you who have been sleeping on Mic T check out the video below of him going in over the "Definition" beat as well as his earlier Mixtape "Terrordome Vol. 2".

Asher Roth Joins Count Terrorist Unit

A quick homeland security related update coming at you. It's unusual for CBM to report on developing stories (since we like to be able to present detailed analysis based on facts rather than just spread rumors like many blogs...) but I had to make an exception for this one. Anyway, Asher Roth was on a flight from ATL to LA to perform on Carson Daily's show when an unidentified man assaulted a crew members while claiming to have a bomb. Luckily, Jack Bauer Asher Roth along with several other passengers (“What up Bangley!”) subdued the man. The would be terrorist was later turned over to authorities at L.A.X. This is the FBI press release to the Associated Press. It remains unclear whether this entire story of heroism is acurate or if it is in anyway being spun as a publicity stunt to make Asher look bad ass, but god damn do I hope this one is true.

Wow, the last time it was this awkward for an artist to pretend to be English it was Madonna. This time its Lupe Fiasco - maybe - For two days now all of Chicago had only one question on their mind: Did Lupe really just out hipster Kanye? I mean, we all thought making an all autotune album was out there. Now it looks like Lupe may have flipped the script on us once again. In a plot twist that seems out of an M. Night Shyamalan movie, two songs from a British indie-punk band called Japanese Cartoon surfaced on the web two days ago featuring a singer that sounded a hell of a lot like Wasalu Mohammed Jaco, better known as Lupe Fiasco, but with a British accent. The two songs are posted below. The controversey over whether the lead singer who the band claims is named Percival Fats is actually Wasalu Mohammed Jaco remains unsettled. Japanese Cartoon released a press statement claiming that while Lupe produces the bands music he is not Percival Fats. I feel like this is a rediculous story line in Hip Hop History and I hope it goes away. Without belaboring this any further - I mean it's just cruel - I have to emphatically say that these songs are aweful. This makes "Street Lights" sound like "Changes" by comparison. Barack Obama is crying somewhere because of you Lupe (Yeah, Lupe voted for Hillary too.)

On a much much brighter note, Jim Jones went in on the Rivers Cuomo is a dick bag Weezer free version of Asher Roth’s “I Love College.” Jim talks about the differences between college and Harlem hitting on issues from policing and security policy to the drug game. I like this verse a lot because it serves as an interesting counter point to the rest of the song. Unfortunately no one has taken out the whack ass chanting at the end. Maybe I can convince DJ J Paul to remix that along with the no Trick Trick version Eminem only version of “Who Want It.”

When exactly was the drought the Empire is always talking about anyway? As far as I can see Wayne has been making it rain all over the music industry lately. A little background to get things set for this double drop. DJ Drama, Mr. Gangsta Grillz himself, released Dedication 3 about two weeks ago which actually featured more verses from Cash Money MCs like Young Gudda, Jae Millz, and Nicky Minaj than Weezy. The bright side of things is that Drama dropped the Barack O'Drama monicker giving us all something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. However, the gross number of verses from under-qualified Cash Money rappers still left most listeners feeling dirty and a little disappointed with themselves. The most offensive instance of a non-wayne track is “Still I Rise” where Bird Man Jr. let Nicki Manaj do bad bad things to T.I.’s “No Matter What” beat. Dedication 3 however is not all bad. While it does not compare favorably with Drought 3 or Dedication 2, it still has worthwhile moments. The Empire (who barely has a myspace for some reason - damn dude hire some PR people) had to come back and add a part 6 to the already seriously played out Drought is Over series not to be out done. As much as I’d love to hate on this mixtape extra hard, that would give undue attention to yet another half-finished pseudo-album in a long line of unofficial DJ released mixtapes. The Drought is Over Part 6, does have saving moments. Primarily the cover art, which was likely the only part of the album put together explicitly for this release. Like the Empire's voice tag "Holy Shit! Where'd you find this?" Wayne is pictured holding himself as a hipster baby. Don't believe me, check out the twin tear drop tattoos on the baby's right cheek and the one between his eyes. Also he's wrapped in a kaffiah and wearing the Product Red Converse All Stars. Damn that baby looks straight out of Wicker Park. Bird Man Jr. is depicted with black angel wings, remorselessly rocking a lip ring as he saves himself as hipster baby from a lake of blood. Also check out "Red Magic" which I’ll never forgive for stealing the Roc Boys hook.

This is hard for me to come to grips with, but my mom made it into a rap video before me. Granted, I was at the shoot for MGMTs video for electric feel, but lets face it they're just hipster ass Wesleyan students the rest of the world has validated in their current forms. J.Kwest however, is legit. Like community organizer legit. Where's real America now Sarah Palin? Well since real America is now run by a friend of my Mom, who is in J.Kwest's video for his post election anthem "I am (Obama)," I think I can confirm that the South Side of Chicago is now officially Real America. Take that Wassila Alaska. Anyway, J.Kwest's video should serves as a sort of introduction for the rest of you, those living in fake America or Anti-America, to Real America. For us, Real Americans, its just a well made video for a carefully crafted song. Enjoy.

Even as we stand here tonight, we know there are brave Americans waking up in the deserts of Iraq and the mountains of Afghanistan to risk their lives for us. There are mothers and fathers who will lie awake after their children fall asleep and wonder how they’ll make the mortgage, or pay their doctor’s bills, or save enough for college. There is new energy to harness and new jobs to be created; new schools to build and threats to meet and alliances to repair.

The road ahead will be long. Our climb will be steep. We may not get there in one year or even one term, but America – I have never been more hopeful than I am tonight that we will get there. I promise you – we as a people will get there.

There will be setbacks and false starts. There are many who won’t agree with every decision or policy I make as President, and we know that government can’t solve every problem. But I will always be honest with you about the challenges we face. I will listen to you, especially when we disagree. And above all, I will ask you join in the work of remaking this nation the only way it’s been done in America for two-hundred and twenty-one years – block by block, brick by brick, calloused hand by calloused hand.

What began twenty-one months ago in the depths of winter must not end on this autumn night. This victory alone is not the change we seek – it is only the chance for us to make that change. And that cannot happen if we go back to the way things were. It cannot happen without you.

So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism; of service and responsibility where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves, but each other. Let us remember that if this financial crisis taught us anything, it’s that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers – in this country, we rise or fall as one nation; as one people.

Let us resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politics for so long. Let us remember that it was a man from this state who first carried the banner of the Republican Party to the White House – a party founded on the values of self-reliance, individual liberty, and national unity. Those are values we all share, and while the Democratic Party has won a great victory tonight, we do so with a measure of humility and determination to heal the divides that have held back our progress. As Lincoln said to a nation far more divided than ours, “We are not enemies, but friends…though passion may have strained it must not break our bonds of affection.” And to those Americans whose support I have yet to earn – I may not have won your vote, but I hear your voices, I need your help, and I will be your President too.

And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores, from parliaments and palaces to those who are huddled around radios in the forgotten corners of our world – our stories are singular, but our destiny is shared, and a new dawn of American leadership is at hand. To those who would tear this world down – we will defeat you. To those who seek peace and security – we support you. And to all those who have wondered if America’s beacon still burns as bright – tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from our the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope.

For that is the true genius of America – that America can change. Our union can be perfected. And what we have already achieved gives us hope for what we can and must achieve tomorrow.

This election had many firsts and many stories that will be told for generations. But one that’s on my mind tonight is about a woman who cast her ballot in Atlanta. She’s a lot like the millions of others who stood in line to make their voice heard in this election except for one thing – Ann Nixon Cooper is 106 years old.

She was born just a generation past slavery; a time when there were no cars on the road or planes in the sky; when someone like her couldn’t vote for two reasons – because she was a woman and because of the color of her skin.

And tonight, I think about all that she’s seen throughout her century in America – the heartache and the hope; the struggle and the progress; the times we were told that we can’t, and the people who pressed on with that American creed: Yes we can.

At a time when women’s voices were silenced and their hopes dismissed, she lived to see them stand up and speak out and reach for the ballot. Yes we can.

When there was despair in the dust bowl and depression across the land, she saw a nation conquer fear itself with a New Deal, new jobs and a new sense of common purpose. Yes we can.

When the bombs fell on our harbor and tyranny threatened the world, she was there to witness a generation rise to greatness and a democracy was saved. Yes we can.

She was there for the buses in Montgomery, the hoses in Birmingham, a bridge in Selma, and a preacher from Atlanta who told a people that “We Shall Overcome.” Yes we can.

A man touched down on the moon, a wall came down in Berlin, a world was connected by our own science and imagination. And this year, in this election, she touched her finger to a screen, and cast her vote, because after 106 years in America, through the best of times and the darkest of hours, she knows how America can change. Yes we can.

America, we have come so far. We have seen so much. But there is so much more to do. So tonight, let us ask ourselves – if our children should live to see the next century; if my daughters should be so lucky to live as long as Ann Nixon Cooper, what change will they see? What progress will we have made?

This is our chance to answer that call. This is our moment.

Dear Governor Palin,

The youth of America are scared shitless by you. I'm not sure whether its the red baiting or racist attacks that you've made on my family's friends or just your disregard for basic human decency. Frankly you remind us of our friends awkwardly attractive hyper-conservative control freak mom, and that doesn't sit well with us. We don't want her in the White House telling us that we need to stop smoking blunts and start hunting wolves from helicopters. But policy matters aside - This is a woman who named her children Trig and Treg. This shows a blatant disregard for our generation and the naming conventions within the English language. Shame on you Karibu Barby, Shame on you.

In reponse to this kid shit campaign effort, Super Producer Jared Paul brings us a banging track from a rugrats sample. The Stax Rothstein premire track will feature on two upcoming mixtapes including Jared Paul's follow up to last year's Ratatashups. Not to come off as more cocky than usual, but this track is amazing. The quality of writing from Andrew Gladstone "Stone" and Josh Smith "WordSmith" is apparent in each of their carfully crafted lines. Plus just like Kanye I'm working this whole autotune thing out of my system. The difference between me and Kanye is that when I do it I say something that people give a fuck about. The situation in the Economy is dier, this election is of paramount importance, and at this defining moment in history no one gives a fuck about Kanye's heartbreak. He also released a hot freestyle that showcases how he has refined some the more positive elements that developed recently in his flows (e.g. rhythms in his bars like "Smack That" and Encore with better content in his lines). Looks like Shady Aftermath/Interscope is planning some epoch shit for 2009 and 50 Cent plans to drop Before I Self Destruct in December and Dr. Dre's white whale, 8 years in the making, Detox is supposed to be out in early '09.

What it is boys and girls? It's been a great week in hip-hop. Monday was VH-1's Hip Hop Honors. This years Honorees were De La Soul, Slick Rick, Too Short, Cypress Hill and Naughty By Nature. Highlights include a tribute to De La by Q-tip, Mos Def, Estelle, Public Enemy (With Flava Flav) and EPMD. The best performance of the night by far was the tribute to the late Issac Hayes by the Roots, Mos Def, Q-Tip, Cee-lo, Estelle, Scarface and Public Enemy, Shit was FIRE! If you haven't seen it please watch it ASAP.
